Peter Weir did very well for himself at the other awards for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, earning nominations at each of the major awards show and the actual award at the BAFTAs. But Master and Commander proved to be less popular with Cosmo voters, who gave it only a single nomination of its own (for Best Historical). The extra half-point he got for that sole nomination was just barely enough to squeak in his first Best Director nomination at the Cosmos.
