Michel Gondry was formerly best known for directing music videos, commercials, and short films, though he did direct Human Nature in 2001 from a script written by Charlie Kaufman. But it was Kaufman's latest script for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind that has given Gondry an almost cult-like status. The film has earned him almost every award nomination he has ever received, including BAFTA and Saturn Award directing nominations and an Oscar nod for Best Original Screenplay, which he co-wrote with Kaufamn. And its strength at the Cosmos was enough to earn him a Best Director nomination here, too.
