There's a funny thing about Cosmo Lifetime Achievement nominations. Sometimes hard-working, popular actors who are routinely listed as one's favorite actors get overlooked in the nominations in favor of (usually deceased) classic screen legends. There are a lot of reasons for that - for one thing, the classic legends are legends for a reason, and the Cosmos are young enough to not have exhausted the possibilities.
But sometimes it's just sheer forgetfulness...until an actor does a new film (or two) that puts him in the limelight again. It happened with Maggie Smith in 2001, who one Best Supporting Actress for Gosford Park and was then promptly inducted into the Hall of the Fame as the second Best Actress of All Time. And this year, it might be Sean Penn's turn to repeat. Mystic River and 21 Grams apparently weren't very popular (or at not not popular enough) with Cosmo voters, since they each only earned a single Cosmo nod, including a Best Actor nomination for Sean Penn for the former. But they were popular enough to reintroduce him to Cosmo voters, and earned him his first Lifetime Achievement nomination.
