With thirteen Academy
Award nominations, Meryl Streep is the most-nominated person for
an Oscar, surpassing Katharine Hepburn. In
addition, she has been nominated to the Cosmo Hall of Fame every year since
the inception of the awards (losing to Katharine Hepburn in the first year,
Maggie Smith the second, and Bette Davis in the third). At the third annual
awards, she also received three other nominations for her work in The
Hours and Adaptation, but lost to Julianne Moore in both individual
races (and lost the ensemble nomination to The Two Towers).
That gave her the somewhat dubious distinction of have received
the most nominations without ever winning an award.
But for Meryl, four times was a charm: at the fourth awards, she was nominated again for the
Best Actress Hall of Fame, becoming the only individual to be
nominated every year for the Hall of Fame, and this time she
won.
At the fifth year, Meryl was again nominated, this time for
Best Female Villain for her performance in The Manchurian Candidate,
which she won. She also shared in
the ensemble nomination for Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.
