Johnny Depp has long been regarded as one of Hollywood's most unconventional actors, taking on such roles as the disfigured and lonely titular character in Edward Scissorhands, and the titular cross-dressing D-movie director in Ed Wood. But then in 2003 he did the unexpected: he made a pirate into a quirky, unconventional character and, along with co-star Orlando Bloom, turned it into both box office gold and critical acclaim. As the pirate captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Johnny Depp dazzled audiences and critics and suddenly found himself with a SAG award and an Oscar nomination. And though he had never been nominated for a Cosmo before, he received and won two individual and one ensemble nominations in 2003.
In 2004, his starring role in Finding Neverland pleased critics, audiences, and the major award shows alike, and he achieved his second consecutive Oscar nomination for a performance in a role that was thoroughly satisfying but perhaps not as great an acting stretch as previous performances. It also enabled him to earn his second Best Actor Cosmo nomination, one of only two nominations the film achieved at the Cosmique Movie Awards.
At the Sixth Annual Awards, he was nominated for both Best Actor and Best Comedic Actor Halls of Fame, but lost to Marlon Brando and Gene Wilder respectively.
