George W. Bush isn't the first non-actor to receive a Cosmo nomination - at the 2003 awards, singer Marilyn Manson and musical playwright Stephen Sondheim tied for Best Cameo. And he isn't even the first politician - that same year, Senator Robert Byrd was also nominated for a cameo. But he is the first non-actor to receive two nominations, and the first to receive any nominations for another other than a cameo.
At first glance, his nomination for Best Male Villain for Fahrenheit 9/11 may seem unusual. But it's hardly unprecedented: in England, a poll conducted by Total Film Magazine also named him Best Villain. Worst Performance might also seem unusual - but if Cosmo voters were considering "performance" and "acting" in the sense of "taking action," then surely the actions he performed in the documentary would have to be deemed dreadful indeed. And even those nominations are not without precedent: the Golden Raspberry Foundation nominated him for two Razzies: Worst Actor, and Worst Couple (coupling him with either Condoleeza Rice or his pet goat, a reference to the book he was reading to school children at the time he was informed about the September 11th terrorist attacks).
