Each except Star Wars was also nominated for Best Film, which also included The Hateful Eight and Room. George Miller, who has been fêted on the award circuit for Mad Max: Fury Road, managed to squeak in a Best Director nod. The Cosmos select Best Director nominees using an algorithm that factors in each director’s nominations and wins at the other major awards in addition to their film’s Cosmo nominations weighted by category, with Best Film nominations counting the most. Mad Max’s failure to receive a Best Film Cosmo nod and its Most Overrated nomination hurt its scoring, but Miller nevertheless managed to snag a Best Director nod based on the weight of his standing at the other award shows. In addition to Haynes and Miller, other Best Director nominations went to Tom Hooper for The Danish Girl, Alejandro G. Iñárritu for The Revenant, Tom McCarthy for Spotlight, and Ridley Scott for The Martian. Miller and McCarthy are the only first-time nominees for this Cosmo award; none have won before. Cate Blanchett, the most-nominated person in Cosmo history, received four individual and one ensemble nominations this year, tying with her Carol co-star Rooney Mara for the most nominations for any individual this year, including another Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame nomination. Other Best Actress Hall of Fame nominees this year include Anne Bancroft, Helen Mirren, Norma Shearer, Sigourney Weaver, and Holly Woodlawn. Ian McKellen, the most-nominated male actor in Cosmo history, received his first lead actor nomination this year for Mr. Holmes as well as his first Lifetime Achievement Hall of Fame nomination. Other Best Actor Hall of Fame nominees this year include Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Michael Keaton, and Ben Kingsley. The six films nominated for the Best Films of All Time Hall of Fame include Amadeus, The Shawshank Redemption, The Silence of the Lambs, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Final ballots are due by midnight on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Timeline
