Some of my friends were upset with
this remake. "You don't mess with a classic!" they cried. Where were they
with the remakes of "The Women" or "Sabrina"?
As remakes go, I actually thought it
was pretty good. It was originally envisioned as an "origins" prequel, but
later changed to be more of a remake of the original with a bit more origins
scenes than the 1984 original. There are significant changes from the
original, including many of the teen characters, keeping the story somewhat
fresh for those who remember the first film better than I do.
I confess that I really don't
understand the need for all of these remakes. I do get the desire to
continue a successful franchise, and with Robert Englund too old to reprise
his role necessitating the need to recast Freddy, perhaps going back to the
beginning will help introduce it to newer audiences. Let's hope the
subsequent sequels head off into fresh territory.
