The results are in! In a private ceremony held on April 16, Million Dollar Baby was named Best Film of 2004 by the Cosmique Movie Academy, but for the first time ever Cosmo voters split and gave the Best Director award to Martin Scorsese for The Aviator rather than to the Best Picture's director, Clint Eastwood. Baby also tied with Garden State for Best Drama, an award that generally predicts the Best Film winner. I Heart Huckabees took the honors for Best Comedy. Jamie Foxx was named Best Actor for Ray, consistent with the Academy Awards and other award shows, but in an unexpected upset for Hilary Swank, Annette Bening received the award for Best Actress for her performance in Being Julia - the film’s only nomination. It was an unusual year where no single film dominated the nominations and there were few clear front-runners. Spider-Man 2 received 11 nominations, the most of the year, but far short of increasing records set in each of the previous three years. The Aviator and Garden State each took four awards, the most of the evening. Two films and four actors were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Harold and Maude and The Women were both inducted into the Best Film of All Time Hall of Fame, the second time in Cosmo history that there was a tie in this category. Audrey Hepburn and Jack Lemmon were each named to the Acting Hall of Fame, while Charlie Chaplin and Lucille Ball were inducted into the Comedic Acting Hall of Fame. George Bush was an unusual winner, taking home dubious awards for Best Villain and Worst Performance for Fahrenheit 9/11, which as expected also won Best Documentary. Bush is the first politician to win a Cosmo Award; last year, Senator Robert Byrd was the first politician to be nominated. In the new category for Best Queer Film, Eating Out was a surprise winner, beating several other films that enjoyed significantly better distribution. The film’s theatrical run at the Castro Theatre a week before balloting closed was cited as an instrumental factor in its success.
