To raise money to save his gym from a hostile buyout, Peter LaFleur (Vince Vaughn) assembles a team from his hapless gym regulars to compete in a national dodge ball tournament against his nemesis, White Goodman (Ben Stiller), the owner of a rival gym chain.
I have a confession. I don't like Ben Stiller. I've pretty much hated him in everything he's done. I couldn't even bring myself to watch "There's Something About Mary," even when my own mother recommended it.
But "Dodgeball" wasn't really his movie. Vince Vaughn was the lead, and I do like him. And the trailer made the film look rather funny.
Unfortunately, as is often the case these days, all of the funny moments were in the trailer and the rest of the film was dreadful. Absolutely dreadful. Jason Bateman delivers a very funny performance, but his role is so small that it might even qualify as a cameo - and certainly too little to save this film. I've seen worse movies in my life, but not this year. And since I've now seen a record 71 films (so far) released in the 2004 calendar year, listing this one as the very worst of the year says quite a lot indeed.
My Rating: 3
