After John (Cillian Murphy) breaks up with Dierdre (Kelly Macdonald) in order to get her to want him more, he's distraught to see that it seems she's moving on, so he resorts to a life of crime to win her back.
This low-budget Irish comedy boasts a terrific ensemble and a very funny script, but had two important flaws that brought down the rating for me. The first was that the dialog was often very difficult for me to hear, both because of the thick Irish accents (which is my own problem) and because of the sound quality (something the film makers could have potentially corrected). The second was the cinematic choice of shooting (apparently) with a handheld digital video recorder. Shooting in DV was no doubt a budgetary necessity, but the jerkiness of the shooting was disconcerting and, in my mind, unnecessary. I'd be curious to hear the director's thoughts on the matter.
Still, an excellent film and well worth watching. Excellent soundtrack, too.
My Rating: 7
