Down With Love
|
Catcher Block (Ewan McGregor), the classic man's man, ladies' man, man-about-town, is about to meet his match when he encounters writer Barbara Novak (Renee Zellweger) who proclaims that women cannot succeed unless they renounce love and romance.
With Down With Love, Cosmo voters gave Renee Zellweger her third Best Actress nomination in a row and also recognized the film for its costume design. The film tied with the documentary Spellbound for being the fourth highest rated film seen by Cosmo viewers.
This comedy is wonderfully clever - I actually went and saw it twice in the theaters. The film spoofs the romantic Doris Day/Rock Hudson comedies of the 50s and 60s. Renee Zellweger could well deserve a third Cosmo nomination in as many years for her performance here. Also, this is one of the few times when the song on the closing credits enhanced the film, rather than seeming to be slapped on.
My grade: A
